Hot Stuff in Marin

The weather  was  about as bad as it could get today for Garden Conservancy Open Day in Marin County. Our annual 'June Gloom' has been nowhere to be found  and the sun was bearing down this morning with desert-like intensity. Here in Napa we reached the big 1-0-0 (plus) and Marin, in spite of it's proximity to the bay, was unpleasant. I was semi-undaunted;out of 4 gardens open I picked out 2. Foolishly the Worth Garden was not one of them. Remorse.
A hillside garden in Kentfield was my first stop, a garden that is a showcase for Berkeley artist Marsha Donahue. (I visited Marshas' garden here.) Though the conditions  for photography were dreadful, I took many.

  2. Triple digit temperatures is not conducive to garden touring so I applaud your resolve. It looks like it was worth it at least. I have to laugh-in some of the pictures I can't tell the art from the real plants. :)

  3. I've followed Marsha Donahue ever since 1994 when my son's then girlfriend gave me the book Gardening From the Heart, Why Gardeners Garden. (Carol Olwell) I think this is my all time favorite gardening book. There's a seven page spread on Marsha. Thank you for this recent update! I'd love updates on some of the many others from the book.

  4. So glad you took pictures even if the conditions weren't ideal. Thank you for suffering through the heat so the rest of us could enjoy...

  5. I had been looking forward to an escape from the heat (it hit 106°F in Davis yesterday) but Marin didn't offer a lot of relief, LOL. And the intense sunshine made photography difficult. But I'm so happy I went. The gardens I visited (3 out of the 4) were so inspirational. Even the one I didn't like as much (this one) helped me understand my own preferences better.

  6. Wrapped up tight in June Gloom here, but 100 already in Napa!! You did a beautiful job with the photos. I've had tillandsias on the brain lately and plan to visit a supplier tomorrow in Torrance, and then here you are with more tillandsia bait!

  7. 100F: yikes. A wonder you made it to any garden at all in that heat. Beautiful garden! We are still managing to hang on to our June Gloom, and I'm loving it (and so are the plants).
