Ruth Bancroft Garden Tour 2017

I've taken advantage of numerous events that are designated for members of the Ruth Bancroft Garden, most being early entry to plant sales or photography workshops. Last weekend members were offered the opportunity to visit four succulent-centric gardens in the areas surrounding RBG. I was happy to see that in 2018 there will be a similar tour offered.

The garden I am sharing today has been previously posted by Gerhard at Succulents and More , a fellow RBG member and blogger. His stamina was impressive considering that he had recently returned from a lengthy  trip to Europe and seemed none worse the wear. Gerhard posted about this garden and as is often the case he has shared much more detail than I . Be sure to visit his blog to learn more, and see wide views of this garden.
This was the smallest garden of the day but packed with interest. It was located in a 70's era neighborhood of small houses and narrow streets , most of which had lawn and a few shrubs . This corner lot featured a splendid mixture of cactus, succulents and xeric plants.

I'm on a mission to acquire 2  Yucca 'Bright Star' to flank a pathway in my back garden. This has proven to be a challenge. I will not be defeated.

If you are in Northern California, please consider lending your support to the Ruth Bancroft Garden. Members receive  benefits that are well worth the price and we gardeners are the mainstay of public gardens in our region . It is gratifying to help gardens that we visit and enjoy. It is in our interest to make sure these gardens succeed and grow.

  1. Thanks for also sharing your great photos of this interesting garden. Gerhard also mentioned wanting a Yucca Bright Star. Are there none to be had down there in California? They seem to be quite plentiful up here in nurseries, which is strange given they don't take well to our humid, rainy winters.

  2. I love the way those Cylindropuntias look in gardens, although I'd be afraid to have them in my own garden. If you find a source for Yucca 'Bright Star', ask them if they accept mail order requests! They've been impossible to find here in anything other than cost-prohibitive 5-gallon containers. I wonder if someone cornered the market on the plants? It's odd that they're so hard to find - my plants, purchased 3 or more years ago now, came in 1-gallon containers.

    1. I think Monrovia grows them but just try to find one ! Crop failure maybe ? I also can't find Melianthus 'Purple Haze' or Cotinus 'Golden Spirit'. And I brought home a Euphorbia cotinifolia in my suitcase from DC, thanks to a friend in the area after literally years of searching for one.

  3. ditto Kris' request about 'Bright Star,' but I'll drive up if you find any! This looks like a great tour. Making a mental note for 2018, so thanks for the reminder.

    1. It was nice to go on a tour that was restricted to members of RBG;it seemed much more leisurely with out the crowds and fellow attendees were plant-o-philes. Sort of like touring with Idylls come to think of it !

  4. I loved seeing this garden through your eyes. You have a knack for close-ups. I often forget to get closer.

If 'Bright Star' is a Monrovia plant, chances are they're not selling it in anything smaller than 5 gallons, at least in California.

  5. I remember this garden from the San Francisco fling. It was hot as blazes but I still enjoyed it. Great pics, especially the ones where the light is caught in the thorns.

    1. Oh yes, it was hot ! And then hot again in Portland. At least that humidity factor wasn't present .

    1. Oh man Peter , I have had every intention of doing a road trip up to Portland this summer, and here it is August. I'm going to Boston this month so my last chance is going to be September .

  7. This was on the Fling? Must have been the day I was ill.

The 'Bright Star' crop for this spring, I wonder if it failed because of the reasonably plentiful rain?

    1. this was not a Fling garden Hoov, I think Jason was referring to RBG itself. I have heard from growers who are growing crops of Bright Star for 2018.
