Photo Walk at The Ruth Bancroft Garden

Saturday morning I attended a members-only photo workshop at the Bancroft Garden, which happily started at 8am, a full two hours before the garden opens to the public. I never turn down an opportunity to get entry to a public garden when light conditions are relatively conducive to getting decent images.

Our leader was photographer John Ricca, and class size was limited to 10 -we all had ample opportunity for one on one consultations . Though Mr Ricca is not a 'garden' photographer per-se , there are principles that span all genres and much of what he said was useful to me . Best of all, the light was wonderful , transitioning between bright overcast and mild sunlight as the marine layer burnt off.

The workshop emphasized light and composition; garden bloggers the attended Saxon Holts workshop during San Francisco Fling will recall it was suggested that we 'fill the frame' and 'tell a story' . John Riccas approach had to do with shapes, and light. I was really learning the same lesson, expressed a different way.

  1. I'll say you filled the frame! I pick 3rd from the top as my fave, with the opuntia -- wonderfully crunchy textures and beautiful color.

  3. Lovely pictures! There is such a big difference between yours and mine that I took during the Fling, with such harsh sunlight. I bet it was cooler too.

    1. I'd say easily a 30 degree differential Alison. Getting in at 8am made all the difference.

  5. Great photos! It's hard to pick a favorite but I think mine would be the 3rd from the bottom - I love the colors and the sense of movement frozen by the lens.
